It's a lot of "Just stop doing it, you don't need to know why you do it" trickery, it's a lot of "How to get around the very obviously present feelings and navigate them without understanding them," it's a lot of "How to place yourself within an easily understandable format and label all of your thoughts and behaviours in the manner that everything fits and makes sense so that means it's perfectly acceptable."
You probably don't like pop psychology if you are not American, or at least you shouldn't this wasn't designed for you it isn't going to fit, however you may not realize just how much of your awareness of psychological concepts has come out of pop psychology.
With behaviourist psychology we realized, okay we can do a comfortable societal drop of the idea of anybody ever needing to look at themselves, such a thing is unscientific, clear and easy never need to think about it. The concept of psychology is here to help you look at the other, the reason psychology exists is to study everybody but yourself. Pop psychology will deliver you everything you need to confirm yourself upon all of the others, you maintain yourself you never look at yourself you have every single person in this world pegged and diminished within your own little world and therefor you are entirely safe. Ego investment is safe, we're safe.
